BURMESE WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY LISTED ARTIST, YATANABON MAUNG SU (1903-1985)

Description: BURMESE WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY LISTED ARTIST, YATANABON MAUNG SU ( 1903-1985). Description Yatanabon Maung Su (1903 - 1965), Watercolour of a Padaung man, signed 'Yatanabon Mg Su' in watercolor and with pencil inscription 'Padaung Man Leik Tho Toungoo Dist’ This watercolour signed ‘Yatanabon Mg. Su’ in the bottom right hand corner. Well listed Burmese artist. Shows a ring necked man ornately dressed for his ethnic group from the torso up. The rendering of the man’s face particularly shows the artist’s great skill: it is both an ethnic study and a careful portrait of a man – he looks out of the painting at the viewer with his bothered frown. Nine paintings in a similar vein as this example are displayed in the collection of the National Museum of Myanmar. Five more similar paintings are held by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Works by the artist are reproduced in Khin Muang Nuynt et al (2006) and Ranard (2009). Almost all Yatanabon’s known works are of ethnic portraits. They are characterised by careful observation and stern elegance. Relatively little is known about Yatanabon despite his representation in public collections although interviews with a descendant in Ranard (2009) suggest that Yatanabon was born in Mandalay in 1903 and moved to Rangoon in the early 1920s. He was a composer, singer and musician as well as being a painter. He concentrated on painting after 1930. He is known to have painted duplicate paintings of the same subjects although with small differences. Possibly he also worked from early photographs. Working from photographs is not unusual and is a practice that continues today with modern Burmese painters. The condition of this watercolour is fine other than for some mild yellowing from age. Paper has some impressions from handling but minor. Frame is a bit dusty. Light spots and corner stains. Glass intact. Please see photos The watercolor drawing is superb quality with much detail. Incredible hand. The painting is signed lower right and is framed and matted. The painting is 6 3/4” by 9.5” inches and 15.5” by 12.5 inches framed. His works at auction in 2022 sold for $1000 each. Please let me know if you have any questions. Biography: Yatanabon Mg Su (1903 - 1965) was a watercolor artist who actively painted the indigenous people of Myanmar formerly Burma in the years around 1930. He painted his subjects at least twice. Recent auction records show similar paintings being sold with subtle differences. Yatanabon's paintings are held in museum collections and offer an historic record of ever vanishing cultures. His portraits are realistically detailed and alive with facial expression. The sheet is in a burgundy mat. Black wood frame. Ready to hang with attached wire.
