Description: Johnson’s Map of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia. Published in New York City by Alvin J. Johnson. Map measures approximately 18 x 26.75”. Hand-colored map in good condition, with slight wear around the edges and corners. Slight, unobtrusive age-related toning. State borders are highlighted, while counties are individually colored. Contains a wide array of cities, towns, rivers, and more. Please see photos. An earlier printing of Johnson’s Family Atlas, which was published from 1860 to 1887. The publisher, Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884), was a well-known mapmaker whose maps evolved each year as the country grew. This is a rare, Civil War-era look at West Virginia, which did not include Jefferson and Berkeley Counties in this map, as well as other unformed counties and slightly different borders with Virginia.
