LIPPINCOTT PHILADELPHIA Hardcover, 256 pp Oliver Goldsmith's (1728-1774) Vicar of Wakefield was written from 1761 to 1762 and first published in 1766. It was one of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among Victorians. It's a classic tale of the misadventures of a wealthy English country reverend (Charles Primrose) who loses all his money in bankruptcy, but in the end is vindicated. As a classic, it has been reprinted many, many times, but older copies in the 19th century Victorian era (like this one) are still best if you can't afford an 18th century one and they can be quite pricey. The book has only three illustrations (including the frontispiece) all shown in the sample pictures. *Although there is no date of publication in the book, it can be approximated to be around 1892. First, the publisher's address is 715 and 717 Market Street, Philadelphia, where Lippincott was located until 1899 when a fires destroyed the buildings. Then, there is a ad for the Household Edition of Chambers's Encyclopaedia, an entirely new edition which was published 1888–1892 in ten volumes edited by David Patrick. Although this edition of The Vicar of Wakefield could have been published by Lippincott as early as 1881, we think it is more likely 1892 due to the "Home Reading" cover. The book has cover wear (spine ends and corners) and minor soiling. Both hinges are cracked inside but the textblock is good and stable. Interior condition is nearly very good. 5" x 7 1/2" x 1"
