Description: c1850s to 1860s a coat size Royal Navy uniform button made by Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd. in very nice condition with markings, font and concave reverse indicative of buttons from that era..company original "full name" early markings .. Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd. was founded in 1785 and went on to make buttons, officers swords, hats, belt buckles, epaulettes and trunks for ( but not limited to) the Royal Navy. In 1910 they bought an unknown carpentry business to help meet growing demand for thier wooden trunks. After the first world war the company became known as simply Gieve Ltd and the uniform buttons produced just before and after this were stamped accordingly on the reverse...during the blitz of 1940 their 21 Bond Street location in London was destroyed as was most of their book keeping records and companies archival collection.
