Description: Antique Shadowbox Picture Frame American, Victorian era, circa 1875. Complex, two-part frame. Carved walnut wood with gilt composition inner border. Multiple concave and convex rounded and curved surfaces ( see the photos ). The inner section has a wide, curved gilt cove ( gold-colored inner lip ). This frame was made for an 8" x 10" photograph or picture. Frame outer dimensions: 12" x 14" The frame is about 2 1/2" deep, overall. Rabbet : 8 1/8" x 10 3/16" ( 8" x 10" : this is the outer dimensions of the picture which will fit well ) Sight : about 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" ( this is the viewing area, as seen from the front of the frame ) Mitered corners. Constructed with original hand-cut "square head" nails. Includes the original glass and original wooden panel backing. Old screw-eyes and wire hanger. There are four nails holding the old wooden panel in place ( these four nails are not original to the frame, but are still old ). This frame is unusual in that the sheet of glass is placed above the gilt area. This means that the gold area of the frame was protected by the glass from exposure to the air and environment over the course of the many years since it was made. The result - the gold decoration is still in very nice condition! Moreover, the wooden parts of the frame are also in unusually nice condition, with very little wear. The old glass, which has several small "sliver" air bubbles ( typical of Victorian ear glass), is also in great condition. Exceptionally nice condition. Victorian era shadowbox frames which are still in original condition as good as this are hard to find! Ready for an antique family photo or a treasured picture of your own.
