The Big Slide 239 Glossary of Words and Terms 242 Index252 Inside front flap "Call the Big Hook" is the order given by the chief dispatcher when a disaster strikes the railroad. Mechanical department employees in wrecker service drop everything to man the giant derrick used to clear the track. It is a mobilization of railroad forces, whether it is a runaway, a sideswipe, or a boiler explosion. Call the Big Hook is, of course, somewhat autobiographical. It is the story of the author's years of service with the D&RGW. This volume also transcends from the age of the steam locomotive to that of the diesel-electric as the prime means of railroad motive power. It illustrates the evolution of railroad safety practices that the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad has made during the lifetime of the author. While this book is primarily historical, since all events have taken place, the reader will learn the cause, effect and how a given accident could have been prevented.
