Description: American WW-2 era Camillus USAF pilot survival/fighting knife - this type was issued to the American air crews during WW2 as an all-purpose 'bail-out" knife. Well-used specimen with a few edge nicks; the blade has been re-sharpened; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers handle with red-black-n-bronze spacers, bronze guard, and an aluminum pommel. The handle is tight with no play; the guard is a little bent on one side. The knife is about 9-1/8" / 23.25 cm overall; the blade is about 5" /12.8 cm long. Original leather scabbard is used but in fare condition overall. Original stitching and rivets; the keeper is MIA. This type was issued to the American aircrews during WW2 as an all-purpose knife in case of a bail-out. During the war a relatively small order of "pilot knives" was placed with Camillus; these Pilot Knives are scarce in good condition these days. This exact type is illustrated on page 85 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey - a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book's page scan attached).
