Description: In Stock and Ready for Immediate Shipment!Long SOLD OUT at the Royal Canadian Mint! This SPECIAL EDITION, low mintage (only 10,000), pure silver dollar features that icon of Canadian sport, the Earl Grey Cup, the equivalent of the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the Super Bowl champions! When the first Grey Cup tournament was played in Toronto in 1909 before 3800 spectators, few could foresee that one day the championship would be watched, celebrated, and obsessed over by millions. The year 2012 marks the 100th Grey Cup tournament, a game celebrated by a 9-day festival in Toronto, Ontario. So, yes, they have football in Canada, too - and it's phenomenally popular! In fact, it's very similar to American NFL football, with slight noticeable differences including a larger playing field, only three downs and twelve men on each side of the line of scrimmage. This pure silver proof features elaborate, intricate engraving and has one of the absolute lowest mintages ever for any Canadian pure silver dollar ever - only 10,000 total! The Grey Cup Championship is the equivalent of the Super Bowl, so like all special edition silver dollars, we expect this trophy to sell out quickly! Celebrating the Grey Cup Championship's 100th Playing The Grey Cup is more than a trophy: it is an iconic symbol for Canadians. The Grey Cup game, the championship of Canadian professional football, is the country’s single largest annual sporting event, attended by tens of thousands and watched by millions every year. The week-long celebration that surrounds it has become one of Canada’s most significant cultural rituals. And the lore that envelopes them both is an integral part of the Canadian history. The first game of football ever recorded in Canada took place in 1861. The style of this game would today be recognized as rugby. By the 1870s, distinctly North-American rules were first codified in Montreal and soon adopted in the United States. A few decades later in 1904, when the Right Honourable Albert Henry George Grey, the 4th Lord Earl Grey, became Canada’s 9th Governor General, he wanted to leave a mark on the country’s sporting landscape. He first considered donating a namesake trophy to senior amateur hockey, but this trophy was given by Sir H. Montagu Allan instead. Lord Grey’s silver chalice was donated to Canada’s Rugby Football Championship. The first Grey Cup game took place at Rosedale Field in Toronto in 1909, with the University of Toronto defeating the Parkdale Canoe Club before 3,807 fans. The game generated revenues of $2,616.40 for the Canadian Rugby Union. Competition for the Cup was suspended for a few years, because of the First World War, and then in 1919 over a rules dispute. The Roaring Twenties saw teams from Western Canada participate in the Championship for the first time. In the 1930s, the Grey Cup Trophy migrated West when Winnipeg won it in 1935. In the 1940s, despite suspension of play in the professional ranks between 1942 and 1944 because of the Second World War, service teams competed for the Cup. Following the war, the game of football, and the Grey Cup in particular, grew increasingly popular among Canadians. The 1948 Grey Cup is generally recognized as the beginning of the modern Grey Cup era, when Calgary Stampeders fans descended upon the streets of Toronto in full western regalia. Thereafter, Canadians flocked each year to the host city to participate in the festivities surrounding the big game. In the 1950s, amateur participation ended and the Canadian Football League© (CFL) emerged as Canadian professional football’s governing body. Today, the game is attended by fans from every corner of the country, and each year it is one of the most watched televised sports events of any kind in Canada. In 2012, the 100th Grey Cup game will be played in Toronto. It will be preceded by a nine-day festival that celebrates Canada, the game of football, and the bond between the two. And this celebration will itself be the culmination of Grey Cup events throughout much of 2012. Fans from across the country and around the world are sure to set new records for attendance, passion for our game, and pride in being Canadian. Investment Note Here's a coin with a ton of investment potential, to say nothing of cachet! First of all, it's eminently affordable - and struck in the purest silver refined anywhere in the world - .9999 fine! The sports theme is extremely popular, too, as is the denomination (it is a silver dollar, after all, and it's a special edition one at that!)! It's also one of the absolute lowest mintage pure silver dollars ever from Canada - only 10,000, far lower than the typically annual silver dollar, and the same as the infamous Queen Mother silver dollar of a decade ago, which now trades for hundreds of dollars! Don't let it sell out on you, get yours today! Purity Note The Royal Canadian Mint refines the purest silver in the world. This pure silver dollar is 99.99% pure! Obverse The obverse design by Canadian artist Filip Mroz centers around the Grey Cup trophy mounted on the large base upon which winning teams’ names, management, and players are recorded. The silver cup’s graceful proportions and silver sheen are rendered to lovely effect through exceptional engraving in the polished silver field against which the cup is set. The background of the central field is engraved with a detail of the text that appears on the Grey Cup itself, in the the same gothic text. This detail includes the dedicatory words, “Presented By His Excellency Earl Grey” and “Amateur Rugby Football Championship of Canada.” Embossed against this background is the number “100” in celebration of the 100th Grey Cup game and the words “Grey Cup/Coupe Grey”. The date and denomination are also indicated. Reverse A frosted cameo proof portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") also appears. Packaging The coin is encapsulated inside a black leatherette, clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and protected by a full color outer sleeve. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
