Antonio Visentini was an architect and topographical draughtsman, etcher and playing-card maker, apprenticed to Pellegrini, worked much for Consul Smith. His made series of 38 copperplates altogether after Canaletto, of which the first 16 plates were published in 1735 by Pasquali, then in 1742 the set had been retouched and published with two further sets of 12 plates each, plus a new title-plate shows aurora rising over Venice and new version of the frontis piece portraits of Canaletto and Visentini. All three groups of plates carry captions in Latin and show views of Venice. SKU Venedig 1. Magnum Canalem The print shows the Grand Canal in the Sante Chiara section with a view to the southeast. The tower in the background on the left could be the campanile of the Chiesa di San Geremia, the prominent dome of which had not yet been built when the engraving was made (redesign of the church in 1753). The bank is lined with buildings, people roam the streets along the Grand Canal, and a multitude of gondolas are on the water. Part of the second group of copperplates Inscription: Prospectus in Magnum Canalem e Regione S. Clarae ad Aedem S. Crucis. | 1. 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig 2. Aede S. Crucis The print shows the Grand Canal at the entrance to the lagoon with a view to the northeast. The dome of San Simeone Piccolo appears on the right. In the foreground on the right is the church of the Santa Croce Monastery, which was closed under Napoleon in 1806. The nuns were moved to the Santa Chiara Monastery and the church building was demolished some time later. However, the monastery complex PP (Patres) Discalceatos mentioned in the caption cannot be assigned. Part of the second group of copperplates Inscription: Prospectus ad Aede S. Crucis ad P.P. Discalceatos. | 2. 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig XIV. Bucentaurus et Nundinae Venetae in die Ascensionis The print shows the view from the lagoon in the south of Venice in north direction to the Palazzo Ducale (right) and the Campanile of San Marco (left). The dome of San Marco can be seen in the background. The print shows the festivities on Ascension Day. There are countless decorated gondolas on the water. In front of the Palazzo Ducale you can see the Bucentaurus (the golden barge), the Doge's magnificent ship. This festival was one of the most important festivals after the carnival and was practised until 1796. Part of the first group of copperplates Inscription: Bucentaurus et Nundinae Venetae in the Ascensionis. | XIV 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig XIII. Ad Aedibus Balborum ad Pontem Rivoalti The print shows the Grand Canal looking east. The Rialto Bridge can be seen in the background. The point of view is at the level of Palazzo Papadopoli from the second half of the 16th century (left margin). There are currently festivities taking place on the Grand Canal, possibly the aftermath of a sea battle (Nauticum Certamen). There are decorated gondolas on the water and a large number of spectators populate the shore. It could be the feast of Venice's victory over Aquileia in 1162, which was celebrated during Carnival until 1797. Part of the first group of copperplates Inscription: Nauticum Certamen cum Prospectu ad Aedibus Balborum, ad Pontem Rivoalti. | XIII 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig XII. Ex Fullonio usque ad Aedem S. Clarae The print shows the section of the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce district viewing at the western exit of the canal, facing east. The wall on the left belongs to the monastery area of Santa Chiara, which was closed in 1806 during the Napoleonic rule. The nuns were moved to Santa Croce and the convent was initially converted into a military hospital. Today the Questura is housed there. The buildings on the right side of the picture no longer exist; this is where Venice's main train station is located today. Inscription: Part of the first group of copperplates Inscription: Ex Fullonio usque ad Aedem S. Clarae ubi Canalis desinit. | XII 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig XI. F.F.DiscalceatorumTemplo,S.SimeoneMinore,adFullonium This is a view from the Ponte degli Scalzi bridge on the Grand Canal looking southeast. On the left rises the mighty structure of the church of San Simeone Piccolo with a portico, designed after the Pantheon in Rome, and a large dome, reminiscent of that of Santa Maria della Salute. San Simeone Piccolo was built from 1718 to 1738 by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto (c. 1700-1764). The church of Santa Maria di Nazareth rises on the right-hand edge of the sheet, a monastery church of the Discalced Carmelites, which was built from around 1654 under the direction of Baldassare Longhena (1598-1682) and is a replica of Palladio (1508-1580). One recognizes a two-storey gable front with vertically structured columns. In between, the canal runs to the centre of the picture with a few ships in the foreground. Part of the first group of copperplates Inscription: Hinc ex F.F. Discalceatorum Templo, illinc ex S. Simeone Minore usque ad Fullonium. | XI 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751 SKU Venedig X. F.F.DiscalceatorumTemplo,S.SimeoneMinore,adFullonium The print shows a view to the northwest into the confluence of the Canale di Cannaregio seen from the Canl Grande. On the left is the south-eastern facade of the Palazzo Labia, in front of it stands the flagged campanile of the Church of San Geremia. Here you can still see the previous building of the church, which was newly built in 1753. The Canale di Cannaregio is spanned in the middle of the print by the Ponte delle Guglie bridge, which can be easily recognized by the four obelisks at the end of the railing. There is a lot of shipping traffic on the canal. Part of the first group of copperplates Inscription: Ingressus in Canalem Regium ex Aede S. Jeremiae. | X 1st publication by Giovanni Battista Pasquali (1702-1784) Drawing by Canaletto / Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) Copperplate produced by Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) before 1751
