Description: One of ma's many quirky items she saved forever! I find from surfing the web that Caro-Nan purses were made by Carolyn McDaniel and Nancy Steele in Jackson Mississippi from the late ’50s to the mid ’70s. As their popularity spread, they custom-made them for boutiques around the country, with the names of that town’s stores and landmarks (even though all of the buildings always look like they’re in Amsterdam, architecturally speaking), and for individuals with place names that meant something to them, like the one in the picture above. The inside, which I didn’t take a picture of, is lined in country style, cotton, floral print cloth (think Vera Bradley bags). And they glued on a “lucky penny” with the year of the purse’s creation which in this case is 197! How bout that!The purse measures about 10" across total on the outside width and about 8-3/4" inside across. With the handle up it is about 12-1/2" tall all added up. Inside is about 5" from front to back. Inside depth is about 8-1/2" deep. This purse was purchased in Fort Lauderdale Florida. The shop names hand printed on some of the buildings include Village Vogue (the shop from which it was purchased) as well as Pier 66 a famous building with restaurant, lounge, boat marina and more on the intracoastal waterway and Wolfie's Restaurant which was on Sunrise Blvd. It appears that some of the shellac wore and pulled of a bit of the writing on Wolfie's and on the word Village on the front. which you can see the wear in the photos. See the photo's for condition. There is yellowing on the lining fabric at the top where they shellac finished the wood and the shellac bled onto the fabric. I also notice a bit of light fading as well as what is probably an ink pen stain at the very bottom. All part of the story the bag tells about being used and enjoyed by its proud owner - our mom!
