Description: Robust, tough, long in length and stout in girth (24mm diameter tapering to 20mm) quite heavy (405gm) hardwood walking cane/stick the handle of which is a largish superb carving of the head of a Sapper De La Garde of the Imperial Guard of Napoleonic France (Sapper of the Imperial Guard of Napoleonic France) Superb detail (note the single earring) and craftsmanship. 32mm silver collar, no hallmarks however chemical testing confirms it is silver. 25mm steel tipped brass ferrule, little wear. There is a very slight bend approx 9cm down from the collar otherwise overall excellent condition except for the often found minor scratches, dinks etc etc. Most impressive. Note. The absence of hallmarks on French silver walking cane fittings. It appears it was normal practice for less impressive items of silver (such as walking canes collars, pommels etc) not be worthy of, not important enough or not of sufficient silver weight etc to warrant hallmarking. I have/had 25 or more walking canes fitted with silver of French origin in my collection; on all them the silver fittings bore no hallmarks. There is a rule that certainly applies in the UK (and probably elsewhere) whereby a precious metal object with a weight of a quarter of a Troy Ounce or less need not be hallmarked.
