This unit has been tested and appears to be working as it should. We noticed a tiny bit of crackle occasionally that should be expected of unserviced instruments of this type and age while moving the balance fader, and you might too. At first, we thought this unit may be broken because of some aliasing type of sound we heard underneath the main sound, especially on the pretty and funny presets, but we asked our tens of thousands of instagram followers and several people confirmed that this was normal. However, we needed to hear it for ourselves, so we found a great video about the VL-5 on Youtube entitled "Casio VL-5 with Barcode Reader - Full Review" and, at 8:48, when playing the preset called pretty, we heard the same thing. This video is so well done, we recommend anyone considering buying this item to check it out.
