A complete recording of the hymnology of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in Orthodox Byzantine chant, according to the usage of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church. Recorded at St. George Orthodox church, El-Jedediah, Lebanon in 2004. If you are interested in traditional Byzantine chant, especially from the Arab Orthodox Churches (Roum Orthodox) and if you want Byzantine chant in English, you won't find a recording of the Divine Liturgy better than this! This recording represents years of work and includes all hymns of the liturgy sung to melodies common in the Arab (especially Antiochian) Orthodox Churches, performed superbly, with delicacy and conviction. The quality of the recording is very good: clear as a bell, good sound quality and resonance. The acoustics of the church used for the recording are excellent -- alive but with out excessive reverberation -- and bring the recording to life. The counterplay of the chanting of the melody for each hymn with the underlying ison is wonderful, and some of the hymns recall the sound captured by Sr. Marie Keyrouz in her ground-breaking CD "Chant Byzantine." All in all, this is a "must have" for lovers of Byzantine chant. Byzantine Chant in English Includes liner notes with descriptions and informative material about the hymns in Arabic/English on the CD. The recording of Orthodox chant is a performance for listening, but it delivers additional value of great interest. TRACKS: 1. For most, if not all, of these church singers, English is a third language (the first being Arabic and the second being French), yet their pronunciation and enunciation are superb. Now, through the Choir's latest release - THE GREAT DOXOLOGIES IN THE EIGHT MODES, precious masterpieces by chanter-composers dating from the mid-18th through the early 20th centuries have been retrieved from the bottom shelves of psaltiria and given well-deserved new life in a new language - English. Old masterpieces chanted by a young choir in a new language: quite an accomplishment! + B A S I L Bishop of Wichita and the Diocese of Mid-America Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North AmericaThis beautiful recording presents a much-needed example of traditional Byzantine chant in English. It is one of few such recordings by genuine Byzantine choirs. Not only does it provide listeners with prayerful music, but it is also an invaluable learning tool for people who want to learn the authentic style of Byzantine chant. +Papa Ephraim - St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery in ArizonaThe Great Doxologies CD is a truly wonderful accomplishment! The compositions of ancient masters come alive in this recording by the renowned Choir of Mt. Lebanon. Equally impressive is the authenticity of the Antiochian ethos performed in the English language. I encourage all chanters—or those who simply love Byzantine chant—to listen to this beautiful CD. Faithful throughout North America will benefit greatly from this monumental work.+Fr. Chris Salamy - Pastor of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in ArizonaIt is good to have the opportunity to listen to all the eight tones in a single disc. As a Byzantine chant newbie it really helps me learn the scales and feel the differences. The Mount Lebanon Choir is a great ensemble. Good work, I recommend.Anne DeBlois (Thetford Mines, QC, Canada) ---------------------------------------------------------- Also, for sale separately: -Limited Quantity! Hard to find!!
