Description: Challenge, George H. Doran Company (1923). RARE FIND, the first printing of this romance and adventure novel by V. Sackville-West was suppressed in the U.K. A later edition was printed in the U.S. and released with a red cover. The story echos the author's true-life love affair with Violet Keppel. The sturdy cloth board cover shows moderate signs of wear and age, including scratches, scuff marks and some faint staining. The title imprint on the front is clear, but the spine imprint is worn and faded. Page edges are browned but undamaged. The hinges are creased and a bit loose, but still intact. The binding is secure. The center of the flyleaf page is becoming detached (see picture). Aside from some slight tanning, all interior pages are clean and unmarked and the text is sharp.
