CHARLES AHRENFELDT LIMOGES H & CO AHR379 COVERED VEGETABLE BOWL BLUE FLOWERS

Description: Unusual covered vegetable serving bowl made by the Charles Ahrenfeldt factory of Limoges. What makes it unusual is that it has the "CA" Ahrenfeldt mark (both under- and overglaze), but also an "H & Co." overglaze mark with a star. Typically, H & Co. in the context of Limoges refers to the famous Haviland & Co., but I have never heard of a connection between Ahrenfeldt and Haviland, and have never seen this logo under the Haviland name before. There is also the possibility that H & Co. does not refer to Haviland at all and could be the name of a department store in the US or UK which imported Ahrenfeldt tableware lines for its customers, which was frequently the case in the early 20th century. The Ahrenfeldt mark would date this piece to the period 1894-1930. If anyone knows anything more about this H & Co. mark, I would love for you to reach out to me! In any case, the floral pattern on this piece is called "AHR 379" on Replacements Ltd., and features clusters of blue and pink flowers all over the lid and the bowl. It looks mostly hand painted and even has an artist's name on the underside of the lid, "Nelle," which is also unusual for a piece of tableware.There is heavy gilt decoration all over the finial on the lid, and on the two side handles of the bowl, which includes several hand painted hearts....again, very unique for the era. There are also gold daubs on the scalloped foot. This piece measures about 6 1/2" tall with the lid on, 12" wide and 8" deep. It's in outstanding condition with no chips, cracks or other damage and no visible wear to the decoration. It came from an estate on the Gold Coast of Long Island, where the owner had a large collection of lovely Limoges pieces, which I will be listing over the next few weeks.
