Description: French Artist Charles Blondin (1913-1991) Impressionist Oil Painting of Paris’ Place du Tertre in the Montmartre neighborhood. In the background you have Sacre Couer Basilica and L’eglise St Pierre. Painting was done around 1930 to 1940. One tell-tale sign is the canvas is nailed to the canvas stretcher. As opposed to the modern habit of using staples to secure the canvas to the stretcher. The second “tell” is the lack of an electrified lamp posts in the artist’s painting of Place du Tertre. Yes, Montmartre was electrified but not as complete as arrondissements near the Seine. I even checked a Maurice Utrillo Place de Tertre painting from 1932 (he was Blondin’s contemporary) and no lamp posts. Artists who were painting pre-War, still used the “H” canvas stretcher or a modified version. The wood stretcher for the canvas here does not have mitered corners, no keys, no middle brace. The subject matter is pure Impressionism urban scene. Following Haussmann’s revamping of Paris in 1870, artists took to the streets to show typical fleeting moments of life. A genre that continues to this day. The oil paint colors evoke an earlier time. Modern colors bring a harshness and you lose that subtle reflective light older oil painting pigments can present.
