The Sound Paperback – January 1, 1962by Ross Russell (Author)Publisher ? : ? Macfadden; First Edition (January 1, 1962)This is a fictionalized portrayal of the great jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker ("Bird"). The author recorded Bird on his Dial label in 1946 and 1947, creating some of the greatest sides in the jazz discography. He also had a falling-out with Bird over his decision to release recordings of a physically sick and musically impaired Bird from the infamous "Lover Man" session without the artist's permission. This novel presents Bird as Ross Russell saw him: a completely amoral man who lived only for "kicks", a man with an enormous appetite for music, sex, drugs, alcohol, food, and tobacco, which he indulged to the limit without regard for the feelings of others. It is a one-dimensional portrait which, while not inconsistent with the facts about Bird, does not do justice to the man as a complete human being and artist. It is true that many other people also saw Bird in this way, including Miles Davis, who called him the "greediest m.f. who ever lived", but Bird was a very complex character who had many other sides.
