Description: Scarce early original vintage Chicago View Book Souvenir Album entitled CHICAGO. This is the original edition and NOT a facsimile or copy. This Album contains 14 pages with 54 captioned b/w photolithographic images (i.e original photographs printed through a lithographic process). See scans. These photographic views were reproduced by Louis Glaser’s process using a series of stones laid down with separate shades of oil-based inks ranging from white to light sepia-grey to the darkest sepia-grey or black. The finished image has a varnished look, contributing to the illusion of depth not found in lithographs. This album was published by Ward Brothers, Columbus, Ohio and is similar to their fan-fold albums. This was the stapled book version. The fan-fold version is listed for $250. Views include scenes of famous Chicago landmark buildings and monuments. The photographs for the albums were probably collected by traveling agents in the U.S., employed perhaps by one of the four different American publishers who distributed the majority of the albums: Wittemann Brothers of New York, Adolph Wittemann of New York, the Chisholm Brothers of Portland, Maine, and Ward Brothers of Columbus, Ohio. Ward Brothers published most of the Texas souvenirs. Album measures 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches and is in good condition with light cover wear, one tape hinge and weak spine that has also be hinge taped (see scans).There are no missing pages.
