Cider Lemonade Pitcher Decorated by Pickard Studio 1916-1918 Bold Etched Gold

Description: Cider Lemonade Pitcher Decorated by Pickard Studio 1916-1918 Bold Etched Gold An Elegant Decorative CIDER/LEMOMADE PITCHER from Limoges, France, Wide BOLD GOLD Bands w/Etched Gold, Decorated at W. A. Pickard's Ravenwood Studio, circa 1916-1918, imported by P.H. LeonardDESCRIPTION:  This exquisite pitcher has a creamy ivory color outside and a white interior.  The bold gold banding has been acid etched with a beautiful design.  See the photos to fully appreciate it.  The pitcher's mold is one that was used by the Count Thun Factory of Klosterle, Bohemia, Austria.  However, Pickard's gold maple leaf overstamp is so dense that we can not read the undermark even with a bright light shining through it. CONDITION:  The condition of this pitcher is superb.  We can find no defects and very little use wear.  There are a few minor age appropriate rubbing marks to the gold on the lower gold band.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, other rubbings, scratches or hairlines. DIMENSIONS:  This decorative cider pitcher has a widest diameter of 7 3/8"  and stands 5 5/8" tall.  The spout to handle measurement is 8 7/8". HISTORY/MARKS:  Pickard China has a long history dating back to 1893 when Wilder Pickard established his company in Edgerton, Wisconsin.  Towards the end of the century, he moved his business to Chicago and specialized in hand painted porcelain and art pieces.  His first studio operated in the 1903-1905 time period in a converted carriage barn which was built shortly after the 1871 Chicago Fire, hence the name “The Carriage Barn” which employed 32 artists during this time period.  He opened Ravenwood Studio in 1905 on the North Side of Chicago. Anna Atkins (Pickard's sister) suggested that Tiffany's look of hammered gold might be emulated in china by the use of acid etching.  Pickard installed an acid etching room in the rear of the studio on the second floor in 1911.  Joseph Yeschek's son, Frank, was placed in charge.  Use of the solid gold maple leaf mark placed over the manufacturer's mark started in 1912 and was overstamped with a red double circle.  This changed to a black double circle in 1913.  The US Customs Service prohibited the covering of the country of manufacturing and admonished Pickard several times prompting him by 1916 to place the gold maple leaf beside the manufacturer's mark.  (This narrows the time period for this piece to the 1916-1918 era.)   Pickard's son, Austin, joined the company in the late 1920’s and experimented in developing a fine china dinnerware body.  He moved the company in 1930 to Antioch, IL where it remains today where the 4th generation of family members leads Pickards.  After the Great Depression by 1933, only 7 decorating studios remained in the china decorating business in the Greater Chicago area with Pickard being the largest one.
