Description: George W Schaefer enlisted as a bugler in the Battery C 1st New Jersey Light Artillery in 1863 and was promoted to corporal in 1864 and promoted, to sergeant's rank at the War's End. An Original Civil War Noncom Officer's Commission issued to Sergeant Schaefer May 1, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia. The handsome Commission with illustration of a Federal eagle and ornate printed script is on heavy tan paper stock and is ink signed by Christian Warner, commanding the Battery. The 1st new Jersey Light Artillery fought in the Siege of Petersburg from June 1864-the end of the War, incl the 1864 defense of Forts Sedgwick and Fort Hascall known as" Forts Hell and Damnation" and helped repel AP Hill's Infantry assault on Fort Stedman, Lee's last offensive, March,1865. The unit also took part in the pursuit of Lee's Army incl Ford's and Wilson's Station. Captain Christian Woerner, a German-American immigrant was brevetted for his War service.
