Description: During the Civil War the New York Militia regiments stood ready to respond to Invasion of the North and Insurrection, including during Lee's 1863 Invasion during the Gettysburg campaign and the July 1863 Draft Riots and unrest in New York and other cities. Company A of The 88th New York Militia was formed in Oswego County the summer of 1863 to respond to the Draft unrest and threat of riots as Oswego had a large population of workers who were ready to resist being drafted. An Original Civil War Enlistment for Private James D Burgh into A Company, 88th NY national Guard, issued July 4, 1863. The handsome Enlistment bears the Military Seal of the State, as seen on the coat buttons of the New York regiments. The Enlistment is signed by Captain Seth W Alvords as Company Commander. 1p 8 x 12" ptd/ink signed with age stains edge wear, and archival repairs on reverse folds, Overall Good. Comes with roster of officers. Company A was a composed of patriotic citizens of historic Oswego County, which provided over 12,000 men for the War.
