Description: Promo tee for "This is Radio Clash," released originally as a single in '81. When I saw this one, I just liked it specifically because I'd never seen it before. The Clash, as we know, were very inspired by what was happening in New York. Encamped in a Manhattan studio for the bulk of the Sandinista! recording sessions, the band were exposed to early rap, break beats, boom boxes, break dancing, and other elements of proto hip hop--all of which obviously had a huge influence, both musically and lyrically. Then there was the "8-night stand" the band was set to perform at Bond's International Casino (a now-defunct Times Square music venue). Demand was excessive to say the least, and so rather than miss out on any ticket sales, the greedy concert promoters simply oversold the shows by as much as 100%--creating an impossible situation whereby thousands of rabid fans would have to be turned away at the door, lest the fire marshall shut the whole thing down. So as usual, it was the Clash to the rescue; they agreed to increase their commitment from eight performances to seventeen, just to ensure that no ticket-purchasing fan would miss out on the show. And if none of the additional shows happened to coincide with a night that a fan could make it, the band would guarantee that fan a refund. (I swear I want to cry when I'm reminded of how much integrity these guys had. Try to imagine Taylor Swift more than doubling her stint just to look after each and every "swifty." Maybe I'm cynical, but somehow I can't see it.) The gigs featured a different opening act each night, hand-picked by the band, and one of them was none other than a little-known outfit known as Grandmaster Flash. When it became clear that the audience was less than receptive, Strummer seized the mic and let them have it: "Cut the crap and give them a chance! The Clash picked Grandmaster Flash to play for you, and if you don't treat them with respect, then you don't deserve to see the Clash." Damn. RIP, Joe Strummer. And the shirt is dope too, by the way.
