Description: These four boards comprise a later formulation of the classic NOVA 16-bit computer introduced in 1969 by the newly-formed Data General Corporation (see the article in Wikipedia). For cost-reduction Edson DeCastro and his engineering team designed the NOVA around a 4-bit ALU (so four internal processing cycles to process a full 16-bit word) and 1200nS core memory, delivering their design a full year before DEC delivered the first PDP-11. This is the elegant design that Steve Wozniak so admired. Depending on chassis size the original formulation of the NOVA design held up to 7 boards, the first four slots always holding boards labeled by the left handle as “DGC NOVA CPU 1”, “DGC NOVA CPU 2”, “BASIC IO CONTROL DGC NOVA”, and “DGC NOVA 4K MEMORY”. In this later formulation of the classic NOVA design the BASIC IO CONTROL board was replaced by the “DGC NOVA CASSETTE I/O” board, which took advantage of the commercial availability of UARTs in order to support the higher baud rates used by new “glass teletype” terminals. Like the earlier BASIC IO CONTROL board, the CASSETTE I/O board supported multiple options; the board included with this kit implements Option 4077 TELETYPE IO INTERFACE (also known as the Asynchronous Serial Line Controller) which supports 110/150/300/600/1200/2400/4800/9600 baud.
