Description: This cannot be shipped to a PO Box. Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii requires additional postage. This beautiful Andean Life & Myths Retablo is by the famous retablisto artist Claudio Jimenez of Peru. This is a huge extremely complex retablo with the scene not only in the center of the box, but also on Both doors! It is signed on the back by Claudio. I didn’t waste a photo on the signature—see my other listings of his Retablos if you need to see what it looks like. This was imported directly from the artist. It is completely hand-made and hand-painted. The box is made of old reclaimed wood that has a layer of gesso and then is hand-painted in a floral motif. The figures are ceramic over a wire armature. The detail is incredible. The photos just don’t do justice to the incredible detail of this piece. I’ll try to give you an overview of what you are seeing, but I see new things each time I look. I suggest viewing this on a tablet so that you can enlarge each photo and view them in sections. The left door: At the top, a boy and girl shepherd are watching their sheep and goats (12 animals) on the mountain. He plays his guitar and she spins wool. Ten birds (suspended on wire to give the illusion of flight) fly over them. Below, 3 hikers are peeking over the edge of the jungle flora and spy a waterfall. Two devil angels fly around the waterfall playing instruments while a mermaid plays accompaniment. Below this trio, a large mermaid plays the violin to an indigenous Shaman Indian. Center scene: A Peruvian festival—everyone celebrating in front of the church where the bells are tolling in two towers. Twelve birds fly over the revealers. There are 4 musicians, 7 performers in indigenous costume and 19 others. Right door: A Shaman rides a mythical winged-horse with a Condor’s head, through a burning sky. Below—Seven winged devils with pitch forks, look on as two winged devils carry the body of a deceased person to the Devil King. The retablo measures 14” tall by 30 1/4” long with the doors fully open by 5 3/4” deep. It is 15” long with the doors closed. Please view all the photos as they are considered part of this description. This is the actual piece that you will be getting. Please see my other listings for more of Claudio’s fantastic work. Many members of the Jimenez Quispe family are “retablistas”. It is a family tradition and the 3rd and 4th generations of this family are world-renowned artists with works in dozens of museums including the Smithsonian, and the Santa Fe and San Francisco museums of Folk Art. Please ask questions before purchasing. I do combine shipping, but you must wait for a corrected invoice from me to receive the maximum discount. Payment is required within 3 days of purchase.
