US Coast Guard Medal, type 2 service ribbon (authorized September 1998 - January 1999). One service ribbon. LAST ONES!!! There is a very interesting story behind this ribbon. In 1998 the Coast Guard was looking to replace the Coast Guard Medal ribbon with a new design (see photo #2, [not for sale] original, and currently used, ribbon on the left, proposed on the right). The Army Institute of Heraldry designed the new ribbon, the Coast Guard approved it, and the military specification sheet was issued by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) in September 1998. Manufacturers were notified, bought the new ribbon and began replacing the type 1 (original) ribbon within weeks of the change. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard had second thoughts. They cancelled the new design, and the DLA changed the military specification sheet back to the old type 1 ribbon in January 1999. The manufacturers were stuck with full size medals, miniature medals and service ribbons with a now obsolete, and never issued, ribbon. They were sold to dealers and collectors as an oddity. I have never seen a lapel pin for this ribbon, and I do not think any were made. My personal thoughts on this ribbon are that the Coast Guard should have kept it. The design has become universally identified as US Coast Guard and is painted on all USCG ships and aircraft. NOTE TO COLLECTORS: The military specification sheet dictates that the blue stripe will be on the right. Full size and miniature medals with the blue stripe on the left do exist.
