The first Herfy's drive-in was established in 1962 at Everett, Washington by business owner Leon Gardner (1928 - 2011). The restaurant was initially name "Beefy's"... but the name was changed the following year to "Herfy's" (think Hereford cattle!). Gardner operated the new chain of burger restaurants until they were purchased in 1970 by the Campbell Soup Company. The restaurants found initial success as an early competitor for one of Seattle's newest arrivals... McDonald's. After being purchased by the Safeco Corporation in 1980, the restaurants quickly began their slide to oblivion... reducing the number of Herfy's restaurants that year from 43 to only 12... selling off the other 31 properties to a variety of competitors, many of which survive to this day. This series of 16 oz. glasses was sold while Campbell Soups owned the restaurant and offered the glasses to the public as a premium in anticipation of America's Bicentennial year in 1976... a tribute to the United States of America and its founding 200 years earlier in 1776.
