Description: Martin Guitar 00-21NY The following information was given to me by a Martin Guitar archivist. In the 1950's and 60s, the country was swept by a craving for traditional music of many cultures including that of early English settlers in the Appalachians. New York city's Greenwich Village was rife with young traditionalists (future Nobel Laureates excepted) with an urge to actively participate in the fad. The folks at Martin guitars saw NY as a target rich environment and capitalized on that by re-creating an earlier Martin model, the 00-21. That spartan model, having no finger board markings or pick guard obviously satisfied the purist ideals of young would-be artists and between the years of 1961 and 1964 Martin made 946 00-21NY guitars. Your guitar, Serial No. 199442, was made in 1963. The top is likely aged Adirondack spruce. The back, sides, fingerboard and veneer on the slotted peg head are Brazilian Rosewood. The guitar is in original condition, including the case. Ten years ago the New Yorkers were selling in the 3 to 4 thousand dollar range. Now the price of these guitars has doubled. I found two examples listed for $6,500 and $7,020.
