Description: COLORADO MAP! Vintage THE POWERINE COMPANY, Denver, "Colorado & Denver" Map by Chas. J. Hotchkiss Map Co. / Denver, Colorado. (1936???) 4" X 8 3/4" unfolds to 24" X 17 1/2". Printed in blue on white paper inside and out. The Powerine Company, Denver became a creature of Jersey Standard in the 1940s and continued in business for a long time rebranded as "ENCO" stations, mostly. (Some may have survived as "Humble", "Oval E", or even "Pate" stations. Chas. J. (Charles Jerome) Hotchkiss Map Co. of Denver was founded (or rights to the older Clason Map Co. purchased) in the 1930s and operated until sometime in the 1950s. Also, Chas. J. Hotchkiss Map Co. of Denver was most likely (this is speculation) a creature of or at least related to Hotchkiss Printing (or Press) Co. that existed until the last 20 years or so, although the map division seems to have disappeared in the 1950s. Another company owner (in Denver) and I had the printing company produce a few things for our businesses in the 1970s and they had a pristine "Hotchkiss" map framed on the wall. Anything from The Powerine Company, as well any map from Hotchkiss is highly sought after in the west. A large Hotchkiss wall map of Colorado sold a dozen years ago for over $1.000.00 and I sold a Powerine Company (also Hotchkiss) map in the late 1990s for $150.00. There is coding on the map, however I've never been able to decipher it. "Map No. R-208 AA / R36" - I believe that the lower "R36" might refer to it being a reprint (Reprint 1936) of an older Clason Map Co. offering. It is my best guess that the map dates to 1936 (see above), but going by the Census figures at the "cities and towns" list isn't possible - most date back to the 1920s. NOTE: To gas station road map collectors - this is an expensive map because of the map company and the seemingly endless allure and high prices of any Colorado items. I can donate this map to any of several libraries and museums in Colorado and gain a tax write-off greater than my price. Check photos carefully - Very Good. Much used and misfolded decades ago. Photo #1 shows the front cover being age discolored, but #2 shows the back much whiter. The next photo shows the color sameness with the front cover and the map inside. There are pinholes and minor tear at the panel folds and a few stains and discolorations. Could use some TLC but displays nicely. Message me if you want to purchase several maps and we'll try to work out saving you "Shipping" money on multiple items! I've been away from the computer for a while due to health and housing problems - even though my wife and I were able to keep up with filling new orders. I plan on getting back to more or less full time listing immediately. Things have, however, changed and I have discovered that a lot on my old map collection is no longer available. I still have many other items of petroliana and other collectibles that will be listed here over time. Thanks to all of you that have made purchases in the past and I hope that we'll be able to present items of interest in the future!
