Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~|||~~~~~~~~~|||~~~~~~~~|||~~~~~~~~~~~ COLORADO A HISTORY OF THE CENTENNIAL STATE by Carl Abbott, Stephen Leonard and David McComb "Gold! Gold!! Gold!!! Gold!!!! Hard to Get and Heavy to Hold!" read the headlines in 1858 when the precious metal was discovered along the Platte River at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Within a year, the arrival of 50,000 emigrants in the new Colorado mining region forced older settlers and new arrivals to think about establishing an organized community on the Colorado frontier. Government of some kind we must have," said one new Coloradan, "and the question narrows itself down to this point: Shall it be the government of the knife and the revolver, or shall we unite in forming here in our golden country ... a new and independent state?" This pattern of economic boom, arrival of more settlers, and the struggle to establish the basis of a permanent society has been the recurring theme in Colorado history. This history portrays the process of growth through three broad periods of Colorado's development: the era of exploration and set-tlement, the period of economic growth on the new frontier, and the emergence of the modern state. Within this pattern, the authors trace single themes through several stages of development to show how the people of Colorado reacted to particular problems over an extended period. In many ways, Colorado has represented both the good and the bad in America's growth. The state has prospered during the last three decades as a refuge for other Americans trying to escape the mistakes of older regions. But the very pace of growth now threatens to create the same situations in Colorado: urban sprawl, racial bitterness, environmental pollution. The people of Colorado will have to confront these problems with the knowledge that their choices will shape the character of the state for generations yet to come. It is imperative that these decisions be made by citizens who understand how the state came to be what it is now, what possibilities it faced in the past, what choices it made, and why. Only then will contemporary Coloradans be able to look to their future with the same hope that brought their predecessors to the Rocky Mountain gold fields in 1858.
