Golden, Colorado, situated next to the nearly impenetrable foothills along the Great Divide, soon became a settlement -with crops planted and businesses set up- and a stopping place before venturing into the Rockies in search of gold. Mining soon produced tonnage requiring more efficient transportation. W.A.H. Loveland seized this opportunity to develop the Colorado Central and laid track beside Clear Creek to reach Black Hawk, and eventually Central City and Georgetown, where the greatest mining claims lay. Photographers exposed their glass negatives-developing them onsite. This wealth of photography, beginning in 1858, enhances the pages ahead of you, full of knowledge - far richer than gold.
