The Mini Guardian features a 440 stainless steel blade with a non-glare bead blasted finish that has been fully heat treated , plus CryoEdge ®, a cryogenic tempering process at -300° F for a superior edge life. The black ABS handle features ribbed edges and a checkered design for better gripping power. The black ABS sheath features a nylon shoulder strap/lanyard cord that can be worn around the shoulder. About the steel: 440 has been called "the industry standard" and "The ideal compromise" between ease of sharpening and the ability to hold to hold an edge. 440 is hard enough to hold an edge but soft enough to sharpen easily with a common whetstone. Unfortunately, the other knife companies like Buck®, Case®, and Gerber® have chosen to switch to the lower carbon steel 420HC. The reason is that 420HC costs less than 440. This knife can be hard to sharpen with an Aluminum Oxide or ceramic stone but holds its edge much longer. A diamond stone is recommended OR use the Maxim Sharpener. The Tungsten Carbide blades easily sharpen this steel and center your edge, eliminating the main reason people complain about being unable to sharpen a knife What is CryoEdge? Prior to 1980, even cheap knives were fully heat treated. Then came the fuel crisis. Slowly, knife companies stopped heat treating their less expensive blades. Today, almost no knives selling for less than $200 are fully heat treated. This is a two-step process where the blade blank is heated to over 1500 degrees and held there for three hours. It is then cooled slowly in an oil bath to preserve hardness. This results in a very hard but brittle steel. It is ground at this stage and the returned to the heat for fifteen minutes to allow any carbon=carbon bonds to fly apart. It is then quenched – cooled rapidly to lock the carbon particles in place. CryoEdge treatment uses liquid nitrogen rather than water to cool the blade faster, resulting in a higher temper that is more flexible, easier to sharpen, and holds the edge better.
