Description: Item Description WHOLESOME, HEARTWARMING ENTERTAINMENT In 1920's Arkansas, Matt Ballot (Steve Cochran) has returned home after abandoning his family for 12 years of hard drinking in all 48 states. However, he finds his estranged wife (Ann Sheridan) has managed to raise their 14 year daughter and 12 year old son quite nicely without his help, and she gives him the cold shoulder. He also finds he is considered a disgrace to the town and suffers no end of insults and sleights. Fortunately, his family's farm has seen better days which gives Ballot a chance to set about trying to put his life back together while winning back the love of his family and the respect of the town. This is an exceptionally effective and emotional film - the type that is sorely needed in the world today. Inspired by the success of The Quiet Man, the effort put into this film made it one of Republic's last great achievements as the studio unfortunately floundered and slowly died. The trademark TruColor really serves to underscore the storybook nature of this film, and with an excellent cast (especially the always gorgeous Anne Sheridan and handsome unappreciated Steve Cochran), COME NEXT SPRING with its Max Steiner Score, and Tony Bennett theme song has remained unloved an unappreciated for too long by mainstream knowledge. I've heard Scorsese recites it as an influence and it should well be studied by film makers to see how well a small budget but love and care can result in an excellent tough, real, romantic family drama. The real and crumbling backwoods town they all vist in one scene is probably as close to real surviving 1920s Smallville-America as we would ever genuinely see. Look for this film and get settled, you are in for a major discovery and a real treat. Probably influenced by the mega success of FRIENDLY PERSUASION and with Johnny Guitar and Quiet Man rentals to spend, Republic saw a moment when they could still take a chance on small town values with an A grade tech effort.
