Description: The American Defense medal is authorized to be awarded only those military members who served on active duty between September 8, 1939 when President Roosevelt declared a limited national emergency, and December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The bronze medal depicts on the obverse a Grecian figure symbolic of defense, holding in her left hand an ancient war shield and in her right hand a sword. Around the top is the lettering "AMERICAN DEFENSE". The reverse has the wording "FOR SERVICE DURING THE LIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1939 OR DURING THE UNLIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON MAY 27, 1941." The bronze medal is 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The suspension and its service ribbon are 1 3⁄8 inches wide.
