Description: Confederate 42nd Georgia Infantry Captain Southern Cross of Honor Signed by Colonel of 3rd Georgia Infantry Up for auction is a Southern Cross of Honor application for Captain Benson Wesley Adams, Assistant Quartermaster (A.Q.M.) and a member of the regimental field & staff of the 42nd Georgia Infantry Regiment. Captain Adams enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in Co. K, 42nd Georgia Infantry (CALHOUN GUARDS. ORGANIZED IN ATLANTA, GA) on March 4, 1862. He was promoted to Captain and A.Q.M. Surrendered with General Seth M. Barton's Brigade at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 04 Jul 1863. Paroled and departed on July 12, 1863. Arrived at Mobile, Alabama where he was furloughed home on July 23, 1863. Exchanged and brigaded under General Marcellus A. Stovall where he served faithfully until he was mustered out on May 10, 1865, in Washington, Georgia. The application is signed by five Confederate veterans including Captain Adams and Lt. Col. Nisbet, of the 3rd Georgia Infantry, and measures 8 ½" wide by 11'"tall. The Southern Cross of Honor Medals were introduced around the turn of the Twentieth Century, to recognize Confederate veterans for their service. The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) created the medal suited for the defenders in grey. Confederate President Jefferson Davis daughter, Winnie Davis, an original Daughter of the Confederacy member, traveled throughout the South bestowing thousands of these medals to aging Confederate veterans. The Southern Cross of Honor applications were filled out by local United Confederate Veteran Camps in order to verify the military service of the applicant. This application was filled out by UCV Camp #759 (R.T. Davis Camp in Eatonton, Georgia) and signed by its Commander, Reuben B. Nesbitt (former Lt. Col. of the 3rd Georgia Infantry Regiment who was wounded nine times in one campaign), its Adjutant (Sgt.) Robert F. Young (member of Co. G, 12th Georgia Infantry), and two veteran witnesses’; I. G. Scott (?) and David H. Rui (?). 42nd Georgia Infantry Regiment The 42nd Georgia Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp McDonald, Georgia, in March 1862, with men from Gwinnett, De Kalb, Newton, Walton, Fulton, and Calhoun counties. The regiment moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was attached to General Seth M. Barton's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The regiment arrived at Vicksburg on December 23, 1862, engaged in the fight at Chickasaw Bayou on December 28, 29. Marched around and below Vicksburg from thence to Big Black, thence to Baker's Creek, engaged in the fight at Champion's Hill on the May 16, 1863. Marched from Baker's Creek to Vicksburg getting back on May 17, 1863. Remained during the siege until surrendering with General Barton's Brigade on July 4, 1863. Paroled and departed on July 12, 1863. Arrived at Mobile, Alabama where they were furloughed home on July 23, 1863. Exchanged and brigaded under General Marcellus A. Stovall, the 42nd continued to fight in various battles with the Army of Tennessee from Missionary Ridge to Bentonville. In December 1863, it contained 444 men and 394 arms, and in November 1864, there were 345 present for duty. The regiment surrendered with 5 officers and 126 men as members of the Army of Tennessee.
