Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) contains compounds called anthraquinones that produce a gentle, natural laxative acting on the large intestines. The herb is used for constipation and helps to soften stools. The anthraquinones contained in the bark inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes in the intestines. Because of this, stool volume increases as it absorbs the excess water, which increases pressure within the intestine. This stimulates muscle contractions in the colon, speeding the clearance of the bowel. This is intended to use for short periods of time and not for long term use. Cascara sagrada is also known by the names California buckthorn, bearberry, yellow bark, and sacred bark, as well as chittem and chitticum in the Chinook language of the Pacific Northwest. The effects are not apparent for at least 6 to 10 hours. Start with a 1/2 a cup of tea before bed to allow the herbs to work overnight. If you need to increase the dosage drink 1 cup of tea before bed. Directions - Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of Cascara in a steeper or a sachet and put in 4 ounces of water. Heat to a high simmer and immediately remove from heat and cover. Steep the tea all day until you drink it at bedtime. You can drink cold or warm it up.
