Description: invocation Of Rain for four percussionists andauthentic voice by Ukrainian Composer Halyna Ovcharenko.When I lived in Ukraine I travelled throughout thecountryside searching for old traditional folk music, rituals and associatedcustoms. In one village of the Sumy region which borders with Russia Idiscovered an ancient tradition of invoking of rain. In old times, in a drysummer, villagers would drown a chaste widow in the river as a sacrifice toGod, hoping for rain. This ceremony came from pagan (pre-Christian) times butduring the last few centuries has omitted the actual sacrifice and lived on asa game. Nevertheless old people who still retain this tradition sincerelybelieve in the magical power of theiraction. I was thrilled by this discovery and wrote my owninterpretation of this sacrificial ritual. It is a personal drama with thedeath of the widow and the joy of the crowd hoping for rain, which will givethem life. At the beginning I use a spell-song from the ritual. The rest of thematerials (music and texts) are my own.
