Description: A fine gilded Sterling silver example of the Coronation Anointing Spoon. The spoon is cast and has a distinctive style with a wide oval bowl, with a raised central ridge in it. The handle is profusely decorated with geometrical motifs and twists towards the end, finishing in a ball finial. It is considered to be the oldest silver spoon known to be English in origin and the original is used to anoint the head of the monarch at the coronation since 12th or 13th centuries, and forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. A lot of regalia was disposed of after the death of Charles I, but the spoon was saved and returned by the purchaser after the Commonwealth. The silver is hallmarked by the Sheffield assay office, with the date stamp , perhaps in anticipation of the coronation of Edward VII. The maker’s mark is for James Deakin & Sons (John & William F.
