CORPUS TOPIGRAPHICUM POMPEIANUM Parts 2,4,5 HC

Description: FINE CONDITION. NOT EX LIBRARY THIS IS A HARD THING TO FIND INFORMATION ON. I BELIEVE THAT THESE WERE THE ONLY VOLUMES EVER PRINTED, THOUGH THERE WERE INTIALLY PLANS FOR A GREATER NUMBERPART IV WAS PRINTED IN 1977, PART V IN 1981 AND PART II IN 1983. I THINK THAT THEY RAN OUT OF MONEY FOR THE REST OF IT. OTHERE THAN A SMALL GREEN LABEL STUCK TO THE JACKET COVER OF VOLUME 2 THAT IDENTIFIED THAT IT WAS COPY #378 OF 1,000 (ALSO NUMBERED AT REAR OF BOOK INTERIOR), AND MINOR EDGE WEAR TO THE DUST JACKETS, THESE ARE IN FINE CONDITION. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, AUSTIN. RICA WAS "Researches in Campanian Archaeology" WITH THE EXCEPTION OF VOLUME V, WHICH HAS QUITE A BIT OF TEXT AND HAS A NUMBER OF MAPS SHOWING LOCATIONS OF DIG SITES. VOLUME IV APPEARS TO BE NOTHING BUT A MASSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY, WHILE VOLUME "II" SEEMS TO BE MOSTLY LISTS FOLLOWED BY NUMBERS AND LETTERS Based on a slipped in card, Part "IV" and "V" were intended to be printed first and I found information that "Part II" was printed next Part 1 seems to have been a Numerical Index of every structural entity within or without the city walls (Later Incorporated into Part 2)Part 2 was to be "an Alphabetical Index" of the structural entities that have been noted since 1957Part 3 was to be an appendix of Lists of categories of structures and features that have been reported in the publications listed in the BibliographyPart 6 was to be THE RICA MAPS OF POMPEII. they do make a point of writing "HOPEFULLY PARTS IV AND V WILL BE FOLLOWED BY".... By the time that Volume 2 was printed, there is a statement on the page before the Title Page that THE RICA MAPS would now be Part 3 and page 205 of Volume 2 begins the NUMERICAL INDEX, thus removing the need for the original Volume 1. Per the Smithsonian, Part 1 was never published. IN THE END, FIVE VOLUMES WERE PUBLISHED AND THEY WERE 2,3,3A, 4 AND 5. THIS AUCTION DOES NOT INCLUDE VOLUME 3 OR VOLUME 3A. Apparently, Volume 3 has 8 folded leaves in a portfolio and possibly was not a book at all. 3A lacks a distributor statement and also appears to have been a group of maps. I don't know if the missing volumes were books or simply portfolios of maps. Apparently, Part 1 and 2 were later combined into Part 2, included here. I do see that THE RICA MAPS was printed in 1984 in an edition of 1,000 but I don't have that issue and it is only held in a few Universities in Germany. EACH OF THESE IS NUMBERED AT THE REAR. PART 4 HAD A TOTAL OF 2,000 COPIES. PART 2 AND PART 5 EACH HAD A TOTAL OF 1,000 COPIES. The introduction of Part V has a breakdown of the dates of pillaging of the ruins in the 1700's and I think that those Roman Numeral Dates are part of the descriptions in all of the volumes. The CTP was intended as a reference tool, providing indices, concordances, bibliography and up-dated plans for scholars studying Pompeii. The project was begun in 1958 at the urging of Matteo Della Corte, Tatiana Warscher and Axel Boëthius, and work continued into the 1990s. The earlier material in the date range of the series consists primarily of reproductions of eighteenth- and nineteenth century materials made for research purposes. Although published under Vander Poel's name, the series was actually created by the Research in Campanian Archaeology group (RICA), which consisted of Vander Poel and a staff of researchers, especially Laurentino García y García and Armando La Porta. As with any publication with such a long history, the CTP went through many different configurations, with varying titles and volume numbers, over the years of planning. In the end, five volumes, II, III, IIIA, IV and V, were published SHIPPING WEIGHT IS 13 POUNDSPLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required. Thank you
