Description: Covington is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,737. It is in and the county seat of Alleghany County located at the confluence of Jackson River and Dunlap Creek, lying on both sides of the Jackson River. Covington was designated as a town in 1819, first incorporated in 1833, in 1840 and in 1873 again. In 1844 there were only 43 houses grouped on two streets. In 1890 the population was 704. Covington Historic District encompasses 108 contributing buildings, in the historic core of the city. One is the Mission Revival Stucco Brick Passenger Station, built in 1915, with a deep bracketed cornice, hipped red tile roof, quatrefoil windows, and arched lobby door and window openings dominates the railroad complex. It was restored in 1971 and used for community events. sah-archipedia The “Chesapeake & Ohio Railway” traces its origin to the "Louisa County Railroad", begun in 1836, which had been built east to Richmond and west to Charlottesville and renamed “Virginia Central”. The “Blue Ridge Railroad” was incorporated and financed by the Virginia Commonwealth in 1852, to accomplish the hard and expensive task of crossing the first mountain barrier to the west. At the same time the “Virginia Central” was building westward from the foot of the mountains. To finish its line across the mountainous territory of the Allegheny Plateau the Commonwealth subsidized the “Covington & Ohio” in 1867 from Jackson, which is now Clifton Forge. I could not find any information on the “Alleghany Hotel”, but it is on this card, published by the “Covington News & Music Co.” The card is postmarked 1915 and is a “Rich & Covington RPO”. It is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse has a message from “Mama” to “My Dear Mary” and is clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated. If this your card, it will be mailed promptly upon receipt of payment......
