In 1929 he became bedridden and started writing short tales and articles for magazines, having a long apprenticeship with the pen before tackling this, his first novel. It remains a minor classic that opens along the Colorado River, about the friendship between a white lad and an Indian of the Fort Mojave Reservation, who joined forces to make themselves feared from the Rio Grande to the Pacific, who stood shoulder to shoulder and fought with clubs against Apache arrows.
