Description: CRYSTALLINE POCKET GOLD from the MOTHER LODE Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Specimen weight: 94.8 Grains (Troy) - 6.14 Grams Size: 34.1X7.6X6.6 mm Here's a wicked piece of gnarly California pocket gold extracted from a hard rock vein. Specimen shows no weathering or deformation. The photos have not been doctored up. The crystalline habit is as found after being meticulously-removed from a lens by a small-scale California miner working his lode. While it appears damaged, close-up study under an illuminated 60X loupe does not confirm this. Gold crystals appear naturally-terminated at this 'dog leg' with a single, under-lying thread of gold holding the entire specimen together. The highly-oxidized gangue is a calcite-quartz mix. Considerable rust is evident. Based on it's weight, heft, and the mushroom-like growths of gold popping up and down the thickest portion, I suspect an inner core of gold. This definitely isn't placer, it's pocket gold. Any decent VLF detector will scream like a banshee. Anyone into gold who doesn't appreciate the natural-ness of this metallic growth simply doesn't understand it's true nature. Embryonic gold is often associated with silicon dioxide (quartz) and found crystallized inside it. Sometimes, other minerals, mainly of a ferromagnesian nature, accompany gold. Such is the case here for, as you can see, there is considerable oxidation associated. All my specimens show visible gold and are authentic gold nuggets or gold matrix specimens. I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but never found a solitary piece with visible gold in it. Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many vein systems sourcing the immense placer deposits of the Sierra Nevada Mtns, the famed Mother Lode. The lure of panning for the royal metal and the companionship of a gold stream are a unique and memorable combination - one which has attracted and held countless numbers of individuals for years. It is not difficult to visualize gold rushes of the past when argonauts endured hardships, loneliness, and occasional misfortune in their quest for bonanza creeks. Few succeeded, a minute part of the whole, because the majority of these men died in obscurity, often virtually penniless chasing their own rainbows to the last. They were a special breed, individuals who had been drawn by the wilderness and never left it - living by their own creeds and following a precarious existence for their entire lives. N.L. Barlee Can I hear an "amen"? GLIMMERS OF HOPE In the lower 48, when watersheds which drain mining districts are gold-bearing, there’s a good chance they’ve been hammered already. Glimmers of hope do remain, however. Few old diggings were completely worked out. Many came close, but eighteen years of prospecting 'hungry ground' taught me this much. If extensive hand work is evident, and the ground is shallow, some of the old timers must have been making bean money. Practically every claim I found gold on had been worked at least once before. With today's gold prices, your chances of making a claim pay are considerably improved. Of course, gold still has to be in the ground. A few colors doesn’t magically transform a property into a gold mine. Most everyone wants ‘a little gold mine to call his own', but properties and claims need locatable minerals on them, gold in this case, to be considered both valid and viable. Sometimes, it takes years of prospecting before one truly knows if his claim's worth hanging onto or not. That’s up to the owner/lessee/prospector to figure out. The B.L.M. isn't responsible for testing claims. It’s up to prudent men and women. They're tasked with satisfying the prudent man test. These minimum legal requirements are spelled out by the 1872 mining law. Many claims don’t meet them in any way, shape, or form, but Uncle Sam at the B.L.M. will gladly accept your money in filing fees. Plenty of placer deposits are minute, confined to one draw, wash, creek, ravine, arroyo, or pediment. Oftimes, these occur directly beneath an isolated quartz outcropping, tertiary channel, active mine, or a mine that's been abandoned. Maybe an ounce of gold is all that remains after the old timers were finished; yet, if today’s prospector finds it, hey! That's not a bad score. Not everyone, however, would spend an entire season searching for one measly ounce. Then again, maybe you would. I did and was thrilled with every little nugget that came along. Based on experience, it's realistic to say a good many claims will not contain ten ounces of minable gold. If you own mineral rights to marginal properties, but are determined to extract every speck, be prepared for a long stay. On a positive note, a recreational miner can have just as much fun mining these smaller deposits as serious miner types who require copious amounts of oro. Thanks for checking out our digs.
