Description: C.S. Lewis (N.W. Clerk), “A Grief Observed,” 1961. 5.5x8x.5. First UK Edition. Original light gray patterned cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to the spine, still bright. Slight rubbing to board edges. Browned shadowing caused by gluing to first and last free end papers. Inscription of previous owner, “JCRA, 1961,” to first free end paper. Clean and unmarked text block, save one pen mark in the margin of page 11. Original first state dust jacket with the Clerk pseudonym has unclipped price of 8s 6d. Jacket is slightly chipped along edges. Slight sunning and soiling to spine, panels, and flaps. A terrific copy, in very good condition, of C.S. Lewis’ agonizing reflections on coping, or attempting to cope, with the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, from cancer in 1960. First published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk because Lewis wished to avoid the connection. This first edition is the only impression which omitted the author’s real name. Lewis used the pen-name N.W. Clerk; “N.W.” stands for “Nat Whilk,” which in Old English means “Not Known.” “Clerk,” because he was a clerk of Oxenforde. 60 pages, with rarely found dust jacket; now in archival protective sleeve. Printed by Faber and Faber, London, 1961.
