Description: Includes an excellent pictorial book of the Republic of Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean (42,800 square miles). Located just 90 miles south of Florida, the island was a Spanish colony for 400 years, then, after the Spanish-American War, started the 20th century with a close association to the United States. After Fidel Castro’s Marxist revolution overthrew Fulgencio Batista’s government (a brutal dictatorship in its own right), Cuba has been a one-party Communist dictatorship, with strict censorship of the press, persecution of regime opponents and government control of all aspects of people’s lives. As a result, Cuba and America have maintained frosty relations over the past 65 years, and several million people from the island republic have escaped the tyranny and economic misery of their homeland for life in the US. The book is a wonderful 9 x 12, 160-page pictorial essay on Cuba, divided into sections based on geography (Havana, Pinar del Rio, The Mid-West, Trinidad, The Colonial Towns, Baricoa, Santiago, Varadero) with a final section of Useful Information for tourists. With text by Franc Nichele and photography by Michel Benaudeau, the volume has been meticulously assembled by two frequent visitors with an obvious love for the place and a genuine understanding & respect for Cuban culture (from Evergreen/Taschen, 2001); and a most excellent tourist map of Cuba, featuring a map of the entire island (home to perhaps 11 million people), along with more detailed maps of various cities & tourist zones (including Trinidad, Santiago, Varadero, Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco & Littoral Norte de Holguin) on one side, and maps of Havana (the capital & largest city) and Old Havana, as well as a brief description of this amazing place, on the other side (from Edicines GEO, 2014).
