Description: Cuban Missile Crisis October 1962 Guantanamo Bay Cuba Evacuation Memento Ashtray On October 22, 1962 without any prior warning, approximately 3000 women and children who were living on the Naval base on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba with their military spouses were hand delivered notices (no other communication in case foreign enemies were listening) stating they had to gather their children with one suitcase each, leave their pets tied in the yard, leave the car keys in the ignitions, and leave house keys inside on a table. They were then told to wait in their front yards for busses to pick them up not knowing if they would ever see or speak to their husbands again. They were bussed to waiting ships and transported to Norfolk, Virginia where they waited... once the crisis was over, each family was presented with an ashtray as a memento of their evacuation. This one states "Presented to Charlotte Hicks as a remembrance of your evacuation from the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 22 October 1962" along with a copy of that urgent notice they were given.This ashtray was given to me by a friend and is authentic and rare (less than 3000 made). It was made by Lakewood Ceramic Arts in Cleveland, Ohio. It measures approximately 7 1/4" square and is in very good condition with some staining on the back which should clean off but I left it.
