Both beloved and hated by his countrymen, on and off the island, Castro was undeniably one of the most controversial political figures of the 20th century. One of the major figures of the Cuban revolution, CAMILO CIENFUEGOS, died in a plane crash 10 months after this photo was taken. The photo in this listing was taken by LUIS KORDA, who with his younger, more famous brother Alberto opened a prominent photo studio in Havana. (Luis Korda's name at birth was Luis Pierce Byers. He and his brother changed their surname to Korda to pay tribute to the famous European photographer Alexander Korda.) Born in 1912, Luis Korda died in Havana in 1984.This glossy poster, which measures approximately 20 by 13.5 inches (51 by 34 cm), was released by Cuba's cultural ministry as part of a portfolio that reproduced some of the most famous photos of the Cuban revolution.
