Description: Found at the estate sale of a retired art dealer, this marvelous antique hand-colored copper plate engraving is Plate No. 807, Eugenia disticha , the Coker-Nut, a British plant, from an 1805 issue of the famed Curtis Botanical Magazine published in London by Thomas Curtis. The illustrator was Sydenham Edwards and the engraver was F. Sansom. The paper is 5.3" x 9" (14 x 23 cm) and the plate size is 4.6" x 8" (12 x 20 cm). The Curtis Botanical Magazine was first published in 1787 so this plate is from Volume 18. The last photo is taken through a 10X loupe to show the detail of the engraving and the hand-coloring. The bottom caption reads: Syd Edwards del Pub. by T. Curtis, St. Geo Crescent Sep 1 1805 F Sansom sculp The paper is aged and has residue from Scotch tape at the top edge (see photos). Sorry, no text page to accompany this plate. The first 30 volumes of Curtis Botanical Magazine, originally titled simply The Botanical Magazine, used copper plate engravings. One volume was issued per year and consisted of 12 monthly issues, each with 3 plates. Sydenham Edwards and James Sowerby were early illustrators for the magazine, which published what was often the first authoritative botanical description of a particular plant species. The circulation was typically 3000 for the early issues. It's still published by the Royal Botanical Society, which changed the name to The Kew Magazine from 1984 to 1994.
