DAVIS - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/10/1898 - HFSID 67395 CUSHMAN K. DAVIS. TLS: "C.K. Davis" as U.S. Senator, ¼p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1898 February 10. On letterhead of the Committee on Foreign Relations, U.S. Senate to Mr. Lucien L. Bonheur, New York. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "I am in receipt of your very kind invitation to the Administration Ball on the evening of March 3d, and regret that, owing to my engagements, it will not be practicable for me to be present. Yours truly." At the time of this letter, Davis was serving on the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations. Just five days later, the U.S. battleship Maine was sunk by an explosion in Havana harbor, creating a foreign relations crisis. Two months later, on April 20, 1898, President William McKinley approved a congressional resolution calling for Spain's withdraw from Cuba. On April 24, the Spanish government declared war, a declaration that was answered by the U.S. the following day. CUSHMAN KELLOGG DAVIS (1838-1900), a Republican U.S. Senator from Minnesota from 1887 until his death in 1900, had previously served as the state's Governor (1874-1876), U.S. District Attorney from Minnesota (1868-1873) and in the Minnesota assembly (1867). In September 1898, Davis helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris that ended the Spanish-American War and gave Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the U.S. Lightly creased.
