Description: About this shell: Name: Cypraeidae Erronea FernandoiAuthor: Cate, 1969Common Name: Fernando's CowrySize: 19.31 mmLocality: Olango Channel, PhilippinesOrigins: Traded with J Whitcher (Western Australia) - Apr 1978. Collected live by trawler at 60-80 fathoms - Jun 1976. This species in itself is very rarely offered for sale. It is untraceable these days and it has been said that one has not been found for more than 10 years. The only way to acquire this species now is from old collections -- like my family's 50 year old collection. We acquired this specimen from John Whitcher, a fellow sheller, collector and family friend back in 1978. This specific specimen is unique, in that it has no color or pattern. It was found live very deep (360-480 feet) by a trawler. Dr. Chen Chong was able to evaluate our specimen (via images provided), and confirmed that it is a Fernandoi but had not yet developed a full marginal callous. Although "colorless" or perhaps "patternless", this specimen has beautiful luster and shape. It's definitely one to brag about because of its rarity. This is part of our late father's large collection of seashells he obtained while stationed on Okinawa, Japan in 1974-1978. His interests in shells grew from more than the Indo-Pacific species when he engaged in trading his shells with some of theprominent collectors around the world. He was an avid scuba diver and seashell collector. The results of many deepdives led to the creation of a collection of some of the best shells Okinawa had to offer. Ted's shells have been cared for and stored for the past 50 years. All are in excellent condition. My sister and I are listingshells after researching them for value, quality and uniqueness. We are not conchologists and are giving our opinion onthe condition and quality of the shell when compared to other listings. My sister and I have two ebay accounts to list my father's shells. If you don't see anything of interest in my listing, please look at the shells my sister hasposted (username: rayd8ter).
