Description: NO RESERVE. 1/1250 WWII German Z5 Paul Jacobi, Type 1934A-class or Z5-class / Z5 Paul Jacobi-class Destroyer as she apparently appeared for the first years after being completed, if not through her entire career with the Kriegsmarine. Commissioned in 1938, she was captured by the British in May 1945. She ultimately was allotted to the French as a war prize in 1946 and renamed Louis Desaix but was paid off in 1948 after only a breif time as a unit of the French Navy. (Note that not all navies have use prefixes with their ship names, such "USS" for United States Navy ships and "HMS" for British Royal Navy ships. Prominent among navies during WWII which did not use such prefixes were both Nazi Germany's Kreigsmarine and the Japanese Imperial Navy. In the case of the former, some postwar authors have subsequently adopted "DKM" - for "Deutsche Kriegsmarine" - in their accounts of the naval aspects of the war. Because of the limited number of characters allowed by ebay in Subject lines, we have used this unofficial prefix for Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt in our Subject for this listing but have omitted the prefix for her and the other German ships named throughout this narrative.) The Type 1934-class or Z1 Leberecht Maas-class of 4 destroyers was begun under the Weimar Republic's Reichsmarine and completed after the Hitler came to power under Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine, the naval branch of the Wehrmacht. As the first ship of her class to be completed, Z1 Leberecht Maass became the flagship of the Kriegsmarine's Leader of torpedo boats (Fuhrer der Torpedoboote). The follow-on Type 1934A-class or Z5 Paul Jacobi-class consisted of 12 destroyers with Paul Jacobi being the lead ship of the class. Named after the commander of the Kaiserliche Marine torpedo boat V25 who was killed in 1915 when his boat hit a British mine in the North Sea, she was laid down on July 5, 1935, launched on March 24, 1937 and commissioned on June 29, 1937. (As a side note, the English word "destroyer" is "zerstorer" in German, hence the "Z" in these German destroyer's designators.) Paul Jacobi was completing a refit at the start of WWII and except for most of 1941 and most of 1943 while undergoing repairs, her active years of the war were spent in areas as diverse as the North Sea, the Artic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel and the Baltic. As indicated above, after being captured by the British in May 1945, she finished her career as the French destroyer Louis Desaix until being paid off in 1948. She was then used as a source of spare parts for other ex-German ships in the French Navy until she was condemned and sold for scrap in 1954. If interested in a further account of her history, you might want to read the Wikipedia article "German destroyer Z5 Paul Jacobi". This group of models are full-hull pieces with the complete underwater portion, including screws and rudders. Very nicely detailed with well-defined mask lines between the different colors of paint used to add to their authenticity. The model comes mounted on a black resin base and is packed between two matching formed clear plastic "supporting" holders, the outer of which is attached to a cardboard backing card. It is recommended that the model be kept upright when the packaging is opened so that it doesn't lean over and bend or break off a fragile part like a mast. Once unpacked, the ship's masts, yards and radars might require slight 'tweaking' to properly straighten or align them. Diecast and plastic model. DeAgostini #DAKS56. MIB. However, as suggested above, the nature of these models is such that small parts including masts, antenna, bridge deck levels and turrets and gun barrels can be misaligned. These conditions generally are only noticeable at close inspection and often can be 'tweaked' into proper alignment. Although the models in this series that we sell are all factory-new, we cannot make any representations that all their features are perfectly straight and correctly positioned. FOR ANYONE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HOW TO INTERPRET A MODEL'S SCALE, THE MODEL IS 3 3/4 INCHES LONG. THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO DIVIDING THE LENGTH OF THE REAL SHIP IN INCHES BY 1250.
