Description: The Maltese Falcon Author: HAMMETT, Dashiell Title: The Maltese Falcon Publication: New York: Grosset and Dunlap, (1930) Description: Hardcover. Octavo, 267pp., plus advertisements. A fresh, fine copy in the publisher's orange cloth, satmped in black .One very gentle bump to one corner, and a small, contemporary owner's name on the front free endpaper, else essentially as new, with a deep greenish topstain. In a nicer than usual example of the dust jacket, which preserved the immortal design of the first trade printing. Small chip affecting the "UN" in "DUNLAP" at the base of the spine, a few shallow nicks and tears, ad the spine panel just a tinge sun-faded, but a most attractive example. This copy printed from the plates of the sixth Knopf printing (per the copyright page). A number of G&D reprints offered in the market are actually much later printings, from the WWII era, which can be identified by the "Madison Square" logo on the rear panel. This copy was probably printed within a year or so of the first trade printing. The first trade edition in this condition will set you back mid-five figures. This uncanny near-contemporary reprint is a very handsome budget-friendly substitute. The book that introduced Sam Spade, whose character was immortalized by Humphrey Bogart in the 1941 film adaptation. Fine / near fine.
